Reverse Phone Lookup - Doing What Yesterday's Phone Books Simply Couldn't!

by Joshua Kingston

The idea of a directory that connects people's basic information, such as their name or current place of residence, to their phone number or other contact information is nothing new. In fact, it's something that's been in practice ever since the telephone was first popularized. It always made sense that contact information would be much more useful if it could be easily indexed, and accessible to the general public. We used to have to do this with a pen and paper. Today's electronic phone directories, however, have about as much in common with switchboard directories from decades past as Alexander Graham Bell's early creations do with a Blackberry. Needless to say, the times have changed, and computer-driven databases have been a substantial driving force.

One relatively new feature that stands out in particular is the idea of reverse phone lookup. This is a different type of directory service that serves an entirely different purpose. To simplify functionality, they function in much the same way that a search engine would, but require different information from the user to be able to function. Instead of looking up contact information based on a person or business's name, you do literally the opposite.

You give the reverse phone lookup site a phone number that you could have gotten from just about anywhere, and it will tell you who it belongs to. It doesn't matter if it's a number that's unlisted in the phone book either, since these directory services usually derive their records from an entirely different source. Exciting new features like reverse phone lookup wouldn't be possible without modern database design and computers that are capable of logically solving problems. They represent just one of the many ways information has become more accessible.
